Death penalty report


December 2024

We are pleased to attach our latest death penalty report covering the period mid November to mid December 2024 with thanks to group member Lesley for the work in compiling this. As ever we must note that China is believed to execute more of its citizens than the rest of the world combined but the details are a state secret. This month saw the toppling of the Assad regime in Syria. People were able to gain access to the prisons where thousands were tortured and executed.

Good news!


Toomaj Salehi has been released

December 2024

Members of the Salisbury group took part in a campaign for the release of an Iranian rapper and he has been released. The joint voices of nearly 27,000 people —Toomaj, an Iranian rapper, activist, and advocate for justice, has been finally released. Iran is an operates an oppressive state with many basic freedoms denied to its citizens.

Together, we sent a clear message to Iranian authorities: The world is watching, and we won’t stay silent when freedom and human rights are at stake.

Toomaj has been a powerful supporter of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, sparked by the death of Mahsa Zhina Amini, a young woman who died in police custody for defying abusive forced veiling laws in Iran. Through his music, Toomaj called for justice, equality, and an end to the violent crackdown on protests in Iran. His release is proof that when we unite for what’s right, we can create change

It is worth remembering that the 10 October was the World Day Against the Death Penalty. As usual we note that China is believed to execute more of its citizens than the rest of the world combined but details are a state secret.

The Vigils continue


August 2024

Here we are in August and we are still holding our weekly vigil in Salisbury market. Over 30 attended during the half hour session and it was all good natured this time. There seems no end to the conflict in Gaza: faint peace hopes were extinguished when the senior Hamas chief, Ismael Haniyeh was killed in Tehran. Some reports refer to a missile strike but later it appeared to have been a bomb placed in the house where he stays in the city, activated from afar. Israel has not claimed responsibility but it is assumed to be by them.

In any event, it has inflamed tensions and together with activity in Lebanon, any prospect of peace looks further away than ever. It is likely after Netanyahu’s rapturous reception in the American Congress last week, he is emboldened to take this kind of action. Retaliation is likely from Iran and so it goes on. Patrick Cockburn writing in the i newspaper (3 August) says that “Israel is getting locked into wars it will not lose – but cannot win”.

Iran: death penalty overturned


Toomaj Salehi’s death penalty overturned. Rare good news from Iran

June 2024

The Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi has been spared the death penalty it was reported by Reuters this morning. A number of celebrities have called for his release including Sting. He is not totally out of the woods however since he will be retried and is likely to be sentenced to a long term of imprisonment. His crime was to sing songs in favour of the many protests which have taken place in the country.

Death penalty urgent actions


June 2024

We have received the following from Amnesty’s Death Penalty project. One concerns attempts by the Republicans in Texas to seek the death penalty for those offering abortions. A second rather distressing post concerns the botched execution attempt of Thomas Creech, one of 9 bungled attempts in the USA in the last 4 years.

Urgent is the case of Ramiro Gonzales who is due to be executed in 6 days on 26th of June. Finally, Toomaj Salehi in Iran, an Iranian rapper who is on death row.
