Group carol singing

Annual carols around the streets of Salisbury a success

December 2025

Each year, for at least a decade now, the group has run a carol service around half a dozen streets in Salisbury. The carols are actually sung by members of the Farrant Singers to whom we are grateful for contributing each year for this event. Members of the group do the collecting. What adds to the occasion is when families turn out to listen to the carols. A high point was one family who said the ‘really looked forward to the evening and for them, Christmas didn’t start until it had happened’.

A (not very good) photo of two families stood in their doorways listening to the carols.

Seasons Greetings to our readers and supporters.

Carols

Group went carol singing in Salisbury last evening

December 2024

This was the 20th year we have done this and it is a pleasure when people come out to hear the singing. For one family who said it was one of the highpoints of the year, they sang two extra. The carols are actually sung by the Farrant Singers and it is wonderful to have a choir of their standing come and sing in the street for us.

“The Farrant Singers, based in Salisbury, are widely recognised as one of the most articulate and eloquent chamber ensembles in England.” (Review in The Church Times 20 June 2022)

We were delighted with the generosity of many which helps boosts our funds. As ever we finished at a supporter’s house for soup, cheese and mince pies. Our thanks to the Farrants and to all those who took part including the collectors.

Don’t forget we are now on Mastodon and Bluesky.

Carol singing

The group carried out its annual carol singing around a selection of streets in Salisbury on Monday. The actual carols were sung by the excellent Farrant Singers who split into two groups. Because of Covid we could not enter the host’s house for soup and cheese which in previous years has been an enjoyable end to the evening. We are grateful as ever for the support of the Farrants and the residents many of whom gave generously to Amnesty. We are also grateful to group member Chantal for providing the hospitality.

Underneath the lamppost …

Once again, we joined forces with the Farrant Singers and toured some streets in Salisbury singing carols.  We were blessed with dry weather.  We collected money for our funds and it was a very successful evening.  Thanks to the Farrants, to the collectors and our hosts for the evening, Michael and Chantal who provided the vittles both before and after.  An enjoyable evening and many residents came out and listened to the singing.

Once again, the Farrant Singers entertained some of the residents in Salisbury with some beautifully sung carols on Monday 19 December.  They sang in and around Marlborough Rd; College St; Victoria Road; Albany and Belle Vue Rds.  Afterwards we enjoyed soup and cheese generously provided by Michael and Chantal washed down with vin chaud.

A successful evening and many residents came out to enjoy the singing.

If you are reading this in the Salisbury area and are thinking of joining Amnesty there are several ways of doing so.  You can join Amnesty International itself for which there is a joining fee and you will receive their magazine.  Or you can just join our group which is free.  The level of your involvement is of course up to you.  Help with our campaigns in the street is always welcome or on the stall we run once a year.  You can come to the annual film we do in conjunction with the Arts Centre and stay on to help with the signing afterwards.  If you have a particular topic of interest – which might be a country you know about – then making that a focus of your activity is a possibility.  The best way is to come to one of our events which you will see here or on Twitter or Facebook (salisburyai), and make yourself known.

Last night the Salisbury group went carol singing around several streets in the city.  The singing was done by members of the

Farrant Singers which meant residents were treated to high quality singing from one of the finest choirs in Salisbury.  To fortify us, we started the evening with a glass of vin chaud kindly provided by Michael and Chantal and afterwards, we all repaired to their house for home made soup, cheese and mince pies.  A most successful evening and thanks to Michael and Chantal for their hospitality, Jonathan and Thomas for leafleting the houses the evening before and to the Farrant Singers themselves.  Also to other group members who played a supporting role.

A happy Christmas to all our readers and followers around the world.
